Status buttons?

To my delight, some participants have linked to the marathon on their collective to declare what they're up to. In one case, that has even directly led to a sign-up! (Thanks, [personal profile] ichiharas!)

That got me thinking: In the fansite sphere, event buttons such as the ones currently up on the site are typically uploaded as a badge of honour after submitting your site, to show that you participated in an event (which may even have inspired the site/design in the first place) and made it to the finish line, and to direct visitors to fellow event creations. Naturally, such buttons can just as well be used to inform about your current activity (and to advertise the event), as in the case mentioned above… But what if we had fun lil graphics specifically for that?

I don't know about the future, but it so happens that there are Neo-Queen Serenity sprites (from the game Sailor Moon: Another Story!) that would make nice status buttons for the current event. :D I think it unlikely that I'll have time to make pixel buttons, blinkies etc., but I'm posting the sprites here in case anyone would like to make some. They could say something like: current status: our kingdoms eternal marathon.

The sprites are from The Spriters Resource if you need the original files or want to browse other elements. Any status buttons without Sailor Moon theme are most welcome too!

If you make any buttons and share them here, I'll upload them to the event site – and the more, the merrier. :) That aside, I'd love to hear if there's any interest in such buttons in general (namely for future shrine events).

Quick note that post-by-email and comment-by-email is (sometimes?) failing silently without actually posting right now! I'm pretty sure this is related to last night's shenanigans and will be fixed once Mark can finish the full fix for it, which he's working on, but if you've posted or replied by email in the last 24 hours, fish it out of your sent folder to check if it posted!

EDIT: This should be fixed as of around 7AM EDT! We *believe* everything that was stuck in the plumbing has been sent along to your journal or the comment thread it was meant for; it's definitely not where it was stuck anymore, at least.

Robby has managed to put in a temporary fix for the site errors and things failing to refresh or not showing up where they should! The permanent fix is going to need Mark's experience, and unfortunately -- seriously, this literally never fails -- Mark has been on an international flight all day, because of course he has. (Never. Fails. He and I are not allowed to both take vacation at once.)

The site will work just fine with the temporary fix in place, things just might be a little slow here and there. We'll keep you updated.

We're aware of site traffic issues and are working to fix them for the people who are having problems! (The tactics the damn bot traffic uses are endlessly shifting, and they're really good at looking like real traffic, sigh.)

Collectives aren't self-serving sites, but made to house all the web projects we've made and (still!!) want to make, big or small, and not limited to shrines. So do tell: What are you working on right now, or what have you just finished?

Let's share and show off, discuss and cheer each other on as our event productivity hopefully inspires activity all around our networks and vice versa! WIP shots are very welcome. ;D

It's been a while since we've done a full code push rather than just hotfixes for bugs, so we are well overdue! Depending on availability, we're aiming to do one sometime soon; we'll let you know specifics once we've worked out good timing for everyone who needs to be available.

However! The reason it's been so long is we kept trying to get some of the stuff that's pending to "really finished" instead of just "mostly finished", and then we once again looked around and went "oh no, this is a really big code push with a lot of changes". Those make us nervous, because while we do a lot of testing ourselves, y'all are really creative in how you use the site and we inevitably find a bunch of edge cases when we let you loose on new code with your real-world data!

So, if folks have some spare time in the next few days, it would be a huge help if you could spend half an hour or so using the site the same way you normally do but with the "Site-Wide Canary" beta features flag turned on. Canary mode is a sort of "live testing" mode: it's your real data, but running the most up-to-date code.

Canary mode always does have a few glitches -- there may be missing text strings or errors about missing database properties, which is a limitation of how we run it. We don't need to know about those, but anything else weird that you run into, leave a comment with what you were trying to do and the error message you got.

I'll repeat that the "here be dragons" caution that's on the beta features page: some things may be broken, so don't use it for when you're doing something important. But a few more eyeballs on it before the push will help the push go more smoothly for everyone.

For folks who want to concentrate on what's changing, we haven't finished the second code tour of what's going to be in this push, but the ffirst one has a good chunk of what's going to be going live. (We'll get the second half done ASAP!)

Comment with the name of a woman character (in any show, movie, book, comic, etc that you think I'm familiar with) and I'll tell you one thing I love about her. In return, you can do the same in your journal (if you like!)

Grabbed this from [personal profile] althea_valara because you know I love female characters.

Pretty much any fandom in my profile or tags is fair game, with the caveat that if it's something I only briefly engaged with I probably won't have much to say. Alternatively just look at my fanlistings for ideas since those are all things I'm still fannish about.

Feel free to comment with multiple characters!

Hello! I'll be helping out [personal profile] nepenthee once again, so you'll see a few posts from me now and then during this event.

How do I...?

Is there something you want to achieve in your project, but you don't know how to make it happen? Ask here! Chances are that someone can point you in the right direction. This can be related to code or design or anything you're struggling with in the execution of your plans. Questions of all levels are welcome, no matter how simple or complex the thing you're struggling with.

That said, if your question is more general or conceptual, do feel free to make your own post to invite wider discussion.

Resources

While it's certainly possible to create web projects without outside assistance, most of us rely on myriad resources around the web to achieve our goals. Have you found something that others might find useful? Share it here! Be it design elements, code snippets, graphic resources, or anything else, you're welcome to share in the comments below. Even if what you've found isn't useful for your work, it's entirely possible that someone else will be inspired by it.

Keep track of updates!

For those of you new or returning to Dreamwidth, you can easily keep on top of all comments made to this post (or any post) by tracking it. Simply click the bell icon on this post and you'll receive all comments directly in your email inbox, so you don't have to check back manually. You're welcome to comment on this post for the duration of the event, so do check back from time to time.

Hope everyone is doing well with their projects! Let's make this event a success together.

a round-up of things that have been on my mind of late.

despite my best efforts otherwise, i've been spending a lot of time playing final fantasy xiv this week. ffxiv stuff )

i've also been getting back into figure collecting recently. i never really stopped, but i definitely wasn't paying as close attention to the figure market as much as i was in 2018. back then, i would spend hours browsing myfigurecollection while procrastinating my writing goal. (i wrote 1,000,000 words in 2018; i went slightly insane during the process.)

anyway, i didn't really have space for all my figures in my old apartment, so after i moved i planned to get new shelves to display them properly. now that i have said shelves i've been unpacking all of my figures... i have more haikyuu!! nendoroids than are reasonable to own, but i was missing two of the core team, so of course i needed to buy those. then i snagged an edward elric i didn't have for a good price. then i fell in love with this sakura miku so i had to get her...

and all this after paying for my preorder of gsc lightning, which set me back more than expected (even with the weak yen) due to Fucking Tariffs. i paid for her at the start of april and i still don't even have a shipping number because i chose the (cheapest) shipping option, which takes months to deliver...

and every day new things get announced!! and i want them!! IT'S A STRUGGLE. right now my next priority is adorable arts lightning because i bought the cloud and tifa from this line a while back and they're surprisingly well made for square enix in-house figures. usually square has so-so quality at best, but this line is really well done and they're a nice size (a little bigger than nendoroids). unfortunately i have no idea where to get this lightning for an affordable price... i used to import directly from japan (see above re: weak yen) but seriously tariffs can fuck the hell off. we'll see what i can find.

in recent years i haven't been great at keeping up with tv (too much time spent playing video games instead) but i do like watching things with friends. currently i'm watching black sails and witch hat atelier (back to back, hilariously) one night a week with friends. we've just started season 2 of the former, and it's excellent so far. flint is a fantastic character; i never know what the hell he's going to do next. as for witch hat i'm really enjoying it! we had to skip this week's episode so i'm a little behind, but coco is darling and i want to know more about qifrey. perhaps i'll read the manga once the anime's done.

i think that's all for now. until the next miscellaneous update.
